Essential oils for children have many benefits and support children’s health, but caution and moderate use are required. Lavender essential oil is most often recommended, while ravensara and eucalyptus are also good choices. They can be used on babies and children of all ages, but you shouldn’t overdo it because the essential oil is highly concentrated. If you are interested in the best essential oils for each of your child’s needs, below is a list of oils, the most important precautions and how to use them (e.g. in an essential oil diffuser).

Essential oils are highly concentrated, contain the essence of the plant and have powerful medicinal properties. They can improve sleep, calm the child, reduce fear and anxiety, prevent respiratory infections and improve mood. They are safe in diluted form, but you have probably seen the warnings on their packaging, which are there for a reason.

It is important to distinguish between harmful (e.g. a whole bottle) and beneficial (a few drops) effects. When used in small amounts, essential oils bring various benefits, which is why they are considered safe for pregnant women, babies and children. It is important, of course, to dilute them in water, a carrier oil, creams, etc.

Precautions – essential oils application

Even the youngest, i.e. babies over 3 months of age, can enjoy the best of nature. However, we recommend moderation in use because children’s bodies are sensitive.

  • do not use them on children under 3 months of age
  • do not use essential oils in their pure form
  • less is more (2-5 drops is enough)
  • your diffuser does not have to work all day
  • leave the room open for air circulation
  • do not drip essential oils directly onto the skin
  • dilute them well when using in a spray/cosmetic
  • test the preparation on a small area of skin before dermal application

Essential oils for babies are thus easiest to use through aromatherapy and creating a relaxing atmosphere in the air. Turn on the essential oil diffuser, add 2-5 drops of oil and leave the room door open for air circulation. We recommend the Immortella ceramic ultrasonic aroma diffuser of minimalist design.

It is recommended to use the inhaler with older children and with very small amounts of essential oils.

The best essential oils for babies and children:

Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) – a mild essential oil with an intense floral scent. It is known for its calming and relaxing effects, and helps reduce anxiety. In children, lavender essential oil promotes sleep, reduces irritability, and has antibacterial and insecticidal properties. A few drops can be added to a cream for a soothing effect on the skin.

Eucalyptus essential oil (Eucalyptus radiata) – is most often used to freshen the air inside rooms and has a pleasant, fresh scent. It helps prevent respiratory problems, has antimicrobial effects, and stimulates immunity. Eucalyptus essential oil is especially desirable for use during the flu, and is often used in inhalers, mouthwashes, and as an insect repellent.

Ravensara essential oil (Cinnamomum camphora ct. Cineol) – known for its excellent immune-boosting effects, ravintsara has a fresh eucalyptus-like scent. Ravensara is a multipurpose oil and one of the most potent antiviral essential oils. It is used as a prevention during the flu and for refreshing and purifying the air. It is recommended to use only from 6 months of age, usually in a diffuser.

** Note – pay attention to which oil you buy as there are many types of lavender and lavandin as well as eucalyptus. For example, the best quality lavender essential oil is Lavandula angustifolia, i.e. real lavender. You can buy all of the listed essential oils for diffuser and dermal application in the Baby Essential Oil Set or separately.
